MLK Day of Service: Serving Flagstaff Together
January 18, 2026 · Service
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
These words inspired Flagstaff Freethinkers to help create the city's first coordinated Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service — a tradition that continues to bring together secular and religious communities alike in the spirit of volunteerism.
How It Started
Before our initiative, Flagstaff did not have a unified day of community service on MLK Day. Working with the Northern Arizona Interfaith Council, local congregations, NAU student groups, and civic organizations, we built a coalition dedicated to turning a day off into a day on.
What We Do
Each January, volunteers fan out across Flagstaff to:
- Support the Flagstaff Family Food Center and food drives
- Participate in community cleanups and beautification projects
- Assist partner organizations with service needs
- Raise funds for local causes addressing poverty and hunger
Building Bridges
One of the most meaningful aspects of this program is the collaboration across belief lines. Freethinkers, people of faith, students, and civic leaders work side by side — demonstrating that shared values of justice and compassion transcend theological differences.
